Development of new processor and architecture is a normal
feature. We find new stuff in the market regularly which makes the previous
ones obsolete. However a component which has continued to stay is the hard disk
drive (HDD). It may be upto100 MB/s but incidentally it is inherently slow for
the latest computers. To solve the problem an amazing device called solid state
drive (SSD) has been introduced.
Hard Disk Drive |
SSD is like an over-sized USB flash drive. It is controlled
by a micro-processor that handles all the read and write operations. Previously
the SSD was rather expensive but now prices have fallen to about $80 for a
128GB solid state drive. Even that model will have read write speeds of more
than 500 MB/s.
SSD have endless benefits. There are no moving parts,
therefore it is completely silent. On the contrary HDD’s have moving parts
which can get damaged from falls and crashes. SSD’s are more secure and sturdy.
SSD’s use only 3 watts which is half the power of an HDD. With the read/write
speeds, SDD’s dominate the HDDs. Nevertheless HDDs are still not irrelevant
yet.
Solid State Drive |
SSD’s are really expensive if you use them for anything
other than installing system files and applications. A typical SSD would cost
around $1 per gigabyte. On the contrary an HDD costs only 7.5 cents per
gigabyte. With the pros and cons discussed above, it is recommended that you
get a 240GB SSD as your core system and application storage. This will ensure
that the operating system boots quickly and apps load and run swiftly as well.
To complement this SDD, you can get ITB HDD and use it as the media storage.
Till such time that SSD prices become affordable, an SSD+HDD combination should
work out well.
